field-based To virtual curriculum
The Majestic Trees team has designed both a field-based curriculum and a virtual curriculum to teach local middle schoolers about local ecology, and how climate change has impacted these systems. As the COVID-19 pandemic issued closures and stay-at-home orders, all academic studies had been moved virtually, which also included our environmental education program. The situation gave us an opportunity to continue providing environmental education to students online, where our team modified all field-based curriculum into "virtual field trips" to learn about local ecology and climate change.
The virtual lessons allowed students to engage in activities allowing them to communicate, collaborate, observe, and think critically about environmental topics and issues. Our team recognizes that these are important skills to learn and practice as it enables students to become engaged in their world, be strong leaders, and environmental stewards.
